SOCALL #5:
Before the show it was announced that Kurt Angle and Rob Van Dam had left SOCALL to "explore other ventures." Management wished them luck and success.
1) Mistico, Atlantis, Ultimo Dragon v Chessman, Abismo Negro, Aguayo, Jr.
Fall 1: Atlantis pins Negro with a quebrada.
Fall 2: Chessman pins Mistico following a confusing sequence of "lucha-style" tags and pin saves. Mistico thought Negro was legal and was caught be surprise with a face full of green mist.
Fall 3: The fall and match was awarded to Mistico, Atlantis and Dragon when Chessman and Negro started arguing and then fighting and brawled towards the back as Aguayo tried to get them back to the ring.
2) The Cobra v X-Pac
X-Pac was greeted with a mixed reaction from the crowd but his pre-match antics won him no favors with his opponent. X-pac came out dressed in a replica Cobra mask and a sports coat. The Cobra hit the ring angry and X-pac could never catch a break. Cobra dominated the brash X-Pac and finally won with the Diving Headbutt.
Before the next match, it was announced that the Light Heavyweight Championship would be unveiled next week and the brackets for the tournament would also be announced.
3) LuFisto v Heidi Lee Morgan
LuFisto wins with an Emerald Flowsion
4) Jerry Lynn v Sabu
This was scheduled to be Lynn v RVD, but RVD's exit left Lynn w/o an opponent, so he took the time to run down RVD and brag about "running him out". Sabu took exception and came down for an impromptu match. Sabu looked to have it sewed up when he missed the Triple Jump, allowing Lynn to land the Cradle Piledriver for the hard-fought victory.
5) The Gangstas v The Dudleys
This blood-bath was eventually ruled a no-contest as both teams were brawling outside the ring when the Eliminators and teh Headhunters came down, igniting a 4-way brawl.
6) Gory Guerrero v the Masked Man
Gory had laid out a challenge to Shane Douglas earlier in the show, Douglas told Gory "he wasn't even CLOSE to the Franchise's level and would have to beat his masked man first. Gory won a hard fought battle against the masked man (who looked a bit more portly than normal), finishing him with a suicide dive that left him open for the pin. After the match, as Douglas and Gory squared off face-to-face, ANOTHER masked man (resembling the more commonly recognized masked man) came from under the ring and attacked from behind. Bam Bam Bigelow joined the assault and the 3 men laid the boots to Gory. Officials eventually broke up the mugging, and a bloodied Gory could be heard promising in Spanish "This is not over, not even close"
7) No-DQ: Mosca/Ayala (w/ Heenan) v Mascaras/Caras
The 2 big men were surprised at teh ferocity of their masked opponents and almost fell early to a brutal assault. Heenan's presence seemed to pull the eventual difference, as he grabbed the leg of Mascaras, preventing him from making the save on Caras who had been blasted with a chair. The match did NOT end with the 3-count as all 4 men continued to brawl and fight up the ramp. After they were separated, Ayala could be seen favoring his right knee.
